Intra- and Inter-sample Variation in Wool Cortisol Concentrations of Australian Merino Lambs Between Twice or Single Shorn Ewes

چکیده
Stress in Merino sheep can cause a reduction the quantity and quality of fine wool production. Furthermore, it has been found that environmental stress during pregnancy negatively affect follicles developing fetus. This study was part larger field investigation on effects maternal shearing frequency reproductive productivity outcomes. For this study, we investigated intra- inter- sample variation cortisol levels weaner lambs. We conducted two experiments, first to determine samples taken from topknot weaned lambs, other aim any difference between treatment (single or twice shearing) absolute In experiment, collected 10 each further divided into four subsamples, leading total 40 subsamples. second 23 lambs produced by ewes (once shorn). The were then extracted analyzed using commercially available enzyme-immunoassay order concentration samples. Statistical analysis for experiment showed there no significant subsamples lamb ( p = 0.39), but statistical < 0.001), which be expected. born one treatments 0.033), with sheared having higher average [2.304 ± 0.497 ng/g (SE); n 14] than ones once shorn [1.188 0.114 (SE), 8]. confirms sampling reliable method adapted researchers hormonal studies Second, mid-pregnancy gave birth concentrations remained unshorn pregnancy. result warrants controlled if access nutrition (feed water) may impact HPA-axis

15 صفحه اولA Comparison of Damara Crossbred and Merino Lambs Wool
Lambs wool production and qualities from the progeny of 2 Merino and 2 Damara rams mated to Merino ewes were compared. The crossbred lambs produced about half the amount of wool and had high fibre diameter variation and medullated fibre components. Merino lambs wool was contaminated with pigmented and medullated fibres apparently transferred from continual exposure to the Damara crossbred lambs...
متن کاملGenetic Parameters in Merino Sheep GENETIC RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN CARCASS QUALITY AND WOOL PRODUCTION TRAITS IN AUSTRALIAN MERINO RAMS
The heritability of carcass quality traits and the genetic correlations between wool production and these carcass quality traits were estimated on 1216 Merino rams. The results showed that carcass quality traits are moderately heritable but pH appears to be lowly heritable. Yellowness and redness of L. dorsi had very low heritability estimate. Moderate negative genetic relationships were found ...
متن کاملThe effect of zinc deficiency on wool growth and skin and wool follicle histology of male Merino lambs.
The aims of this work were to quantify the requirements of Zn for wool growth in growing male Merino lambs, and to describe the histological lesions of Zn deficiency in skin and wool follicles. Four groups of male Merino lambs (n 4) weighing 22 kg were fed ad lib. for 96 d on diets that contained 4 (basal diet), 10, 17 or 27 mg Zn/kg. Sheep in a fifth group were fed on the diet containing 27 mg...
متن کاملGrowth and Wool Production of Single and Twin-born Merino Lambs Reared on a High Plane of Nutrition
No significantly adverse effects of twinning were observed in either liveweight gain or wool growth rate. Singles and twins were similar in weight and secondary follicle/primary follicle (Sf/Pf) ratio at birth; subsequent Sf/Pf development was not affected by birth-type, and liveweights did not differ at any time. Wool production, measured by mid-side-patch clipping, was not affected by type of...
